Zarion joined the Heckscher Lab in 2020 and is currently interested in how neurons, born from the same neural stem cell, adopt unique molecular characteristics as a result of their birth time. His research interests stem from a realization that the neurons comprising complex circuits must first acquire their functional roles through unique molecular programs specifying their fate. As a Chicagoland native, Zarion grew up in Villa Park, IL, and therefore secretly roots for the Chicago Bulls (or any Chicago team with a pulse).
Zarion has two young daughters and spends much of his off-hours being a proud father to them. In an effort to support other children and families in his community, he and his wife volunteer through Safe Families for Children, which is a respite care organization looking to reduce the number of children entering the welfare system. When he has free time, Zarion likes to go fishing, play sports and RPG games, play basketball, and explore the many neighborhoods of Chicago.
